What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of natural healing founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician and chemist more than 200 years ago. The word Homeopathy is derived from two Greek words: homeos – similar and pathos – suffering.

Homeopathy is based on the principle of treating a disease with

a medicine that expresses similar symptoms to the disease itself. The healing power of medicine lies in its ability to mimic the natural disease it is used to treat.

For example, peeling an onion causes itchy, watery eyes. and runny nose. A homeopathic preparation made from onion can be used to treat someone suffering from hay fever. The homeopathic onion produces a similar expression to the hay fever symptoms and the suffering is relieved.

“A medicine which can cause symptoms in the healthy can cure those same symptoms in the sick.”

 ~ Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843)

From its humble origins in 19th century Europe, homeopathy has endured the test of time. Today It is used by hundreds of millions of people and it is the second most widely used system of healing  on the planet.

Health as a State of Balance

According to homeopathy, health is a state of balance which is maintained by an inner life force. The life force is a non-material essence which oversees all aspects of our existence. In health, our bodies are strong, flexible, and pain free. Our minds are clear, confident and responsive and our emotions are resilient, receptive and expressive. In health, we can connect with our inner strength and creativity, experience the richness and fullness of life and respond to challenges that come our way with optimism and resolve.

But when the life force is disturbed by traumas and prolonged stresses, it becomes weakened and imbalanced. This disturbance in the life force is expressed as mental, emotional and symptoms.

Symptoms can be temporary or prolonged. Temporary symptoms indicate that the life force is strong and able to relieve the disturbance and re-establish balance, Prolonged symptoms indicate that the life force has become weakened and is unable to rebalance itself without support. This is the nature of chronic disease.

There are two complementary approaches to addressing chronic disease. One approach  is to reduce the stress load of daily life to relieve the pressure on the life force. The second approach is to strengthen the life force and restore balance.

The purpose of homeopathy is to strengthen the life force. The homeopathic remedy acts as a catalyst to re-establish balance. When the disturbance in the life force is removed and balance is restored, the symptoms resolve. The individual return to a state of health.

Health is a state of balance.

"I can’t manage without homeopathy. In fact, I never go anywhere without homeopathic remedies. I often make use of them."
